Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Kostal Eléctrica, a German manufacturer of electrical components for the automotive sector, has presented a redundancy plan (ERE, ‘expediente de regulación de empleo’) to make 120 people redundant. The ERE plan affects 120 people working at the Sentmenat plant (province of Barcelona), which currently has 747 employees. This plant manufactures window regulators for cars. The trade unions do not agree with the measure. They fear that part of the activity at the Sentmenat plant will be transferred to a group's plant in Tangiers (Morocco). Negotiations between employers and trade unions on the conditions of the redundancy programme are scheduled to begin on 18 July. For several years the automotive sector has been facing a process of transformation towards new mobilities that is leaving behind several redundancy plans. This process is part of a global restructuring of the automotive division within the German-based KOSTAL Group.
