Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Ávoris, the largest travel agency group in Spain, with 1,500 points of sale and 6,300 employees, reached a pre-agreement for the redundancy plan at the travel agency Halcón Viajes on 28 June 2022. On 3 June, a negotiating table was set up between the company and the unions to negotiate the conditions of the collective redundancy that would affect 223 jobs at Ávoris. Of these 223 jobs, 162 belonged to Halcón Viajes and 61 to Avoris Retail Division, the retail division of Ávoris (including for example the brand "B The Travel Brand"). The figures at Halcón Viajes have hardly fallen after the pre-agreement. The number of employees affected has just fallen from 162 to 155, who will receive a severance payment of 28 days per year worked, with a maximum of 18 monthly payments. The main change is that the pre-agreement with the unions includes two alternatives prior to dismissal. The first is the possibility for the affected worker to swap his or her job with another colleague with a similar profile and whose office is not more than 30 kilometres away. If this option is unsuccessful, the second alternative is that Halcón Viajes will offer them possible vacancies for which they may be eligible according to their profile and experience. If both alternatives are exhausted, they will be made redundant. The agreement with Halcón Viajes also includes a commitment not to carry out any redundancies for economic, technical, organisational or production reasons in 2023. In the case of the other section affected, Ávoris Retail Division, there is no clear agreement, and it seems that the planned departure of the 61 workers will be maintained, although the negotiation process is still in progress.
Update 01/07/2022: Ávoris has reduced by 10% the number of employees affected by the collective redundancy plan (ERE), from 223 to 202. More precisely, at Halcón Viajes, numbers have decreased from 162 to 155 (4%), whereas at Avoris Retail Division, numbers have decreased by 23% (from 61 to 47).
