Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Arlanxeo a Dutch multinational company specialised in the fabrication of rubber products has announced it will be dismissing 70 of its employees in their facility in Zwijndrecht. Among the 70 employees facing dismissal there are 55 blue collar and 15 white collar workers. Redundancy are connected to the rising energy prices as well as heavy competition from companies in China, India and Russia. These issues have been ongoing for some time, and a large amount of employees have been put on temporary unemployment for some time in order to save costs. In addition to the reduction in personnel, a wage reduction was also announced.
The trade unions are critical of the decisions by the company management and refuse to accept the decisions. They fear that the remaining employees will be forced to be more flexible.
