Gorillas, a German food delivery startup, announced 300 job cuts of its administrative employees at its global headquarters in Berlin, Germany.
Gorillas announced on 24 May 2022 that it would lay off half of its administrative staff, drivers would not be affected by the job cuts, the company said. It is currently unclear by when the dismissals will be carried out. According to Gorillas, the background to the dismissals is a change in strategy to reduce costs and become profitable more quickly. Gorillas announced its intention to go public and to focus on profitability instead of its previous expansion strategy. In addition, Gorillas had problems in its last financing round.
Gorillas expanded massively in the highly competitive delivery business and was valued by investors at around 2.5 billion euros at the end of 2021. The company was repeatedly in the media because of conflicts with its drivers. They criticised the working conditions in particular. They wanted to achieve better working conditions and a works council. The job cuts at the head office will now have to take place without the participation of works councils. Gorillas employs about 14,000 drivers.
