Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dr. Oetker, a German global food company headquartered in Bielefeld (North-Rhine Westphalia) announced 150 job cuts at its production site in Ettlingen (Baden-Württemberg). The company announced that it will cease production at the Ettlingen site and align to the strategic segments of pizza, cake and dessert.
Dr. Oetkter justifies its decision by citing a declining demand in the out-of-home market for spicy nutritional products, produced the Ettlingen production site. The 150 jobs in production will be cut by the end of 2022, while 68 employees will remain at the Ettlingen site in sales, marketing and administration.
Dr. Oetker announced that after negotiations with the works council, there will be a social plan that includes voluntary termination of employment, dismissals with severance pay and voluntary internal transfers.
Dr. Oetker had reported a turnover of €3.71 billion in 2020 with 34,000 employees worldwide.
