Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Anglo-Dutch meal delivery group Just Eat Takeaway has announced to cut 292 permanent staff in France as part of a job-saving plan. The French leader in home-delivered catering with online ordering is facing economic uncertainty and plans to refocus its ‘employee’ model on just seven cities. Around 269 deliverers will be dismissed, moreover 23 to 30 jobs in support functions will be cut. Just Eat would retain delivery staff on permanent contracts in Paris and its suburbs, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Lille and Roubaix, which account for 75% of orders and two thirds of staff.
Currently, Just Eat serves 2,500 municipalities in France. In 27 of them, since the beginning of 2021, 4,500 couriers have been hired on permanent contracts, while in the other cities deliverers are self-employed. In France, Just Eat employs around 800 people.
