Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Multinational West Pharmaceutical Services has announced the recruitment of 100 employees at its site in Le Nouvion-en-Thiérache (Aisne) by 2024. The company has received €17.5 million as Government support through the Recovery Plan, and plans to invest €60 million to modernise the plant and increase its production capacity. The factory is specialised in the production of stoppers, syringe plungers and needle guards. During COVID-19 pandemic, the site produced caps for vaccines.
The new project involves the automation of certain rubber handling operations. 'The aim is to use robotics for logistics and material transport operations and to refocus our operators on production,' explains the site manager. The company is also planning an energy transition from gas to electric power for several pieces of equipment. This will save 50 tonnes of CO2 on the carbon footprint of the installations.
