Global nuclear fuel cycle company Orano has presented to the works council the second phase of the ‘Convergence’ project, at its plant in La Hague (Manche), and announced the cut of 132 positions by 2027, in addition to the 65 positions already eliminated in the first phase announced in August 2021. The job cuts are the result of early retirement: there will be no layoffs. The overall aim of the project is to bring together the management of the two nuclear waste reprocessing rooms in a single control room: this results in a reduction in the workload of the operators and reduction in the need for supervisors.
The Orano plant recycles spent fuel by separating radioactive materials from the spent components. The site at La Hague is a world leader in the recycling of spent fuel from nuclear reactors around the world. Previous restructuring case has been recorded on the ERM database in 2018, with 800 new jobs (Orano-2018-FR).
