Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dutch e-commerce business Tom Omnichannel Management (TOM) is to cut 100 employees at its plant in Bladel. Of these, 71 permanent employees will be dismissed while 21 people voluntarily resigned. Moreover 179 temporary workers will be dismissed. The company is in financial trouble and has seen its profit margins drop significantly: it has experienced rapid growth in a short time, but has to deal with supply problems and very high prices for container transport from China and India. The company is trying to support the laid-off workers by helping them relocate to other companies in the regions.
TOM is a Dutch e-commerce business with about 14 web shops offering products primarily in the field of leisure products sourced from China and India.
