Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German supermarket retail chain Lidl is to create 570 jobs in Ireland in 2022. New positions will be in both operational - retail staff and warehouse roles – as well as office-based roles, including positions in IT, finance, and human resources. The company has also announced a 'pandemic' pay increase for existing staff from 1 March 2022, at a cost of €10million. The pay rise is on top of Lidl’s commitment to a 'Living Wage” of €12.90 an hour, over €2 above the statutory minimum wage of €10.50 per hour. The announcement was welcomed by Tánaiste Leo Varadkar.
The new jobs and salary investment is part of a wider announcement by Lidl Ireland to recruit more than 750 new employees across Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Currently, Lidl employs 6,100 workers in Ireland and Northern Ireland, across 214 stores, 4 regional distribution centres and its head office in Dublin.
