Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Coop, a member-owned cooperative and Norway's second largest supermarket group, is automating and reorganising its logistics and will cut up to 220 full-time positions at regional logistics centres. Around 65–75 full-time positions will be cut in Trondheim, 30–35 in Bergen, 90–95 in Stavanger and 10-15 in Tromsø. At the same time, Coop is expanding its fully automated central logistics centre at Gardermoen and is to create there around 100 full-time jobs. The process will take place in the course of 2022. Dismissals will be the subject of dialogue with the unions and affected employees will be offered transfers to the central logistics centre.
Coop Norge owns six grocery chains, that consist of just over 1,200 stores in Norway, and employs around 28,000 people in total. Over 1,000 are currently employed in logistics and warehousing units.
