Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Fashion retailer Penneys, part of the Primark brand, is to create 700 new jobs over the next three years. Currently, Penneys employs 5,000 staff in Ireland. The company is to invest €250 million into its store network: existing stores are to be expanded and some new stores are to be created all over the country. Its total retail space is expected to be increased by 20% over the next decade.
Most of the new jobs (600) will be based in stores, including full and part-time retail assistants, trainee managers and department managers. The remaining 100 positions will be in Primark’s global headquarters in Dublin. These roles will be in technology, buying and merchandising, design, sustainability, store development, finance, and HR.
Penneys is one of Ireland’s best-known retailers. Globally, Primark has around 399 stores and 70,000 staff.
