Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Finnish electricity production company, Helen, plans to cut up to 320 job positions. The company starts co-operation negotiations with over 400 employees involved. The reason for the planned job cuts is the company’s cessation of its coal production at the Salmisaari plant. The power plant is in the western part of Helsinki. According to Helen’s press release, the company’s original plan was to achieve the decommissioning of coal at the Salmisaari power plant in 2029, but now the intention is to anticipate it by 1 April 2024. The company has been committed to a transition to carbon neutrality for years.
Helen Ltd is owned by the City of Helsinki and is one of the biggest producers and distributors of energy in Finland with over 550,000 customers all over the country. Helen will announce the plans for Salmisaari power plant after the Board’s decision in December-January.
