Description
Aldel is an aluminium producing and processing company based in Delfzijl, Groningen. It closed the smelter some weeks ago and is planning to cut between 150 and 200 jobs. High energy prices made the production of liquid aluminium no more profitable. The company plans to buy aluminium from other producers, instead of producing it, and to keep the aluminium foundry open. Talks with unions are ongoing: according to employee representatives, it could take weeks before a social plan is on the table. Furthermore, employee representatives doubt that the only-foundry-based business plan is feasible, since it has already shown to be unrealistic in previous restructuring plans.
In the past ten years, Aldel has gone bankrupt twice. In 2017, the company was taken over by investment company York Capital Management.
