Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Revoz, a car manufacturer owned by French Renault, announced the dismissal of 350 of its staff, to take effect in November 2021. The decision is mainly a consequence of a shortage of chips and other component parts. Since January, the company has already lost 73 working days due to the shortage of supplies. It was therefore decided to undertake a more drastic measure in autumn 2021. From November, the production will be reduced to one and a half shift, meaning that the number of cars produced daily will decrease from 650 to 480. Among those 350 workers to be laid off, most are on fixed-term contracts, and others on open-ended contracts. Temporary agency workers were dismissed in previous restructurings. The company trade union is involved in the preparation of the collective dismissal plan.
