Slovak lignite mining company Hornonitrianske Bane Prievidza (HBP) stopped coal mining at the Handlova mine. The decision is in line with government's long-term programme to dismiss brown coal mining in Slovakia. The decision also follows the deadline set by the European Commission (EC) for the closure of individual mining fields in Novaky and Handlova.
The mine in Handlova completed its 112-year mining period in September 2021. According to the Press agent of HBP, 237 employees will be affected by the closure of Handlova mine and 95 people will be transferred to other mining sections of the company. In total, 145 miners are entitled to special severance compensation. The redundancies will be completed by 31 December 2021.
