Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Nevs, a Swedish car manufacturer, plans to cut 300 jobs in Trollhättan, located in the western part of Sweden. The planned job reductions concern 200 white-collar workers and 100 blue-collar workers.
According to the owner of the plant, the Chinese firm Evergrande, the job reductions are linked to the need to invest in the future. However, Evergrande has been struggling financially for some time.
The local shop steward argues that the planned job-cuts were not a complete surprise since the trade union was aware of the financial struggles of Evergrande.
In 2012, Nevs bought Saab’s bankruptcy estate. Nevs was bought by Evergrande 2019. Nevs employs approximately 650 persons in Sweden.

Negotiations have now been concluded with the trade unions. Nev is laying off 225 employees due to Evergrande's debt crisis. Of the 225 employees who will be made redundant, 150 are white collar workers and 75 blue collar workers. Around 55 people have given notice themselves. In total, around 290 people will leave Nevs, which corresponds to almost half of the previous workforce of 650 people.
