Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Italian manufacturer of wheels for trucks and motorcycles, Gianetti Ruote, announced its intention to close the production plant in Ceriano Laghetto (province of Monza and Brianza) and opened a collective dismissal procedure for all the152 workers.
According to trade unions and workers' representatives, the announcement came unexpectedly and despite the significant amount of orders recently received by the company.
Workers and trade unions started protest initiatives, and local and national institutions have encouraged the company to suspend the dismissal procedure and make use of social shock absorbers until a new investor is identified.
