Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
CommScope, an international provider of network infrastructure, has announced that it will dismiss 300 employees at its facility in Kessel-Lo, including 241 blue collar workers and 64 white collar workers. Meanwhile, the production division and the distribution centre will be closed. However, the company's research department (with 200 employees) will continue to operate and remain relatively unaffected by the restructuring measures.
The company management states that the restructuring plans are largely due to the changes in network technology and the increasing competition in the market. While trade unions within the company are critical of this statement and believe that the restructuring effort is mainly an exercise in maximising profit.
