Description

The Dutch retail company Jumbo has announced a restructuring of its supermarkets, causing 4,500 employees to lose their current position in the Netherlands.

The company expects to be able to find another position in the new organisation for at least 90% of those employees. Jumbo aims to keep employees on the same salary in the reorganisation. The restructuring plans should lead to a better service for Jumbo's customers. However, employee representatives suspect a cost-cutting motive behind the reorganisation and expressed their surprise about the timing of the reorganisation, as profits have gone up since the start of the pandemic emergency. Furthermore, some representatives denounced the plan to make redundant employees re-apply to find a position in the new organisation.

Jumbo supermarkets operate under the same name, mostly in the Netherlands. In recent years, it expanded its online activities, opened its first stores in Belgium and acquired several stores from other Dutch companies. The news follows 300 redundancies in May 2020, 550 job creations in May 2018, 200 job creations in August 2017 and 900 job creations in January 2017
