Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The international wholesale chain Makro Nederland reorganises its structure, as a result, at least 209 employees will be discharged and 296 new full-time positions will be created.
Layoffs involve the sales operation division. However, employees who lose their position are encouraged to apply for a new position.
A social plan is in place but was signed by just one of the three trade unions involved.
The company concludes the reorganisation will result in net job creation. However, employee representatives are critical of the reorganisation, viewing it as a cost-cutting operation as it forces long-serving employees to re-apply for a new job with a significantly lower wage.
Makro Nederland, part of the German Metro group, has 3,400 employees. Last year, the company recorded a loss of € 45 million.
