Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Nike, the North American multinational company making athletic footwear and apparel, is to cut 50% of its workforce in Spain – around 100 of the total 200 employees. The measure will affect office staff located in Madrid and Barcelona, while shop and digital sales employees will be maintained. Nike explains that this measure is part of the multinational's global adjustment to simplify the company's organisation.
Currently, the company and workers' representatives are to start negotiations, although the unions have informally known about this measure for the last few months.
Nike has around 40 shops in Spain, where it represents the second largest company in the sector in terms of market share.
