Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Armonea, a chain of care and nursing homes has announced that it will be closing one of its facilities in Molenbeek near Brussels. In total, approximately 140 residents will be obliged to move and between 107 to 114 employees are at the risk of losing their jobs. The main reasoning behind the closure is that the facility is outdated and no longer adheres to modern nursing home standards and that renovation would be too disruptive for residents and too expensive.
Trade unions believe that the company's decision to shut down the operation now are disrespectful towards their employees, as they have been under significant amounts of stress and danger throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
