Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Safilo, the Italian producers of sunglasses and eyeglasses, is to close its Slovenian factory in Ormož, as a result, 557 employees will lose their job.
Ormož site is encountering problems due to the termination of the licensing agreements for major brands and the popularity of acetate products. Moreover, the situation has been worsened with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Safilo management stated that the company is adapting its production capacities to future production needs. It was also said that management negotiates with the trade union about solutions for mitigating the negative consequences of closure. Trade union denied it, saying that workers learned the news from newspapers.
Finally, the restructuring involves also the Italian factories in Martignacco and Longarone.
