Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Amazon, the US-based tech and online retail company, has announced the creation of 170 new permanent jobs. Amazon will open a new distribution centre in Heerlen, the Netherlands.
The distribution centre in Heerlen will be the second for Amazon in the Netherlands, after the opening of a delivery station near Schiphol was announced earlier this year. Until now, deliveries in the Netherlands were sorted at delivery stations in France and Germany, but with online sales increasing rapidly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the distribution network needs to be expanded. Analysts predict that more delivery stations in other regions in the Netherlands will follow soon. In addition to the 170 jobs created at the distribution centre, the creation of 350 jobs at several delivery partners of Amazon is expected as a result of the opening of the distribution centre.
