Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS - the German air navigation services), a company that is under control of the central public administration, plans to cut 270 jobs. The planned job cuts will affect air traffic controllers. Redundancies are to be fully realised by the end of 2024. In addition, the company will reduce the number of vocational trainees in air traffic control. Redundancies are deemed necessary as flight traffic is lower since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and is not expected to recover soon. DFS has negotiated an agreement with the sectoral union GDF ruling out redundancies due to operational reasons. Therefore, job cuts need to be realised on a voluntary basis, for example by early retirement.
