Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Lithuanian postal company Lietuvos pastas is to dismiss 380 employees by April 2021 in different regions of Lithuania. This decision was made after the opening of a new logistics centre in Vilnius. According to the management, the opening of the new logistics centre has made it possible to automate and centralise parcel distribution activities, while significantly reducing the need for manual labour. The company is about to finish the implementation of the smart parcel distribution program. For this reason, Lietuvos pastas will cut about 380 jobs.
The organisation reports that the decision on dismissals was agreed in advance with the company's employee representatives. The company will provide professional advice on job search issues to the dismissed employees. The support and consultations will be provided in cooperation with the Public Employment Services.
Lietuvos pastas is the largest Lithuanian postal company, employing around 4,281 people in the country. The company owns 63 "PayPost" divisions, 10 logistics centres and 260 LP Express self-service parcel terminals.
