Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The automobile equipment manufacturer U-Shin is going to cut up to 220 jobs in France, mainly at the Nevers site which has 410 positions. Negotiations with trade unions are due to begin on 7 January . The company is specialised in the manufacture of locks. According to the management, these job cuts are due to the stoppage of production of locks and anti-theft devices manufactured at the Nevers site. 'It's no longer a market of the future,' explains U-Shin France, adding that previously 'there were six or seven locks per vehicle, on the four doors, the boot, the anti-theft device, the starter, and the glove box, a product that disappears on new models'. The management would like to maintain an activity in Nevers notably for the production of spare parts, specifying that the project should be implemented by December 2022.
U-Shin employs nearly 500 employees on three sites in France for a turnover of €104 million.
