British Telecom (BT), the UK-based multinational telecommunications company, has announced redundancies affecting about 112 workers in its Technology division, according to the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
A spokesperson for BT confirmed that the company is undergoing a restructuring, but said that the job cuts would affect 'a smaller number of people in the business in five years’ time', and added that compulsory redundancies would not be made. On the contrary, a representative of the CWU said the announced redundancies will be compulsory, adding that further job cuts are expected as BT is offshoring roles to India. For this reason, CWU issued a ballot to assess the 'willingness of employees to take industrial action to protest' at the restructuring programme.
In 2018, BT announced plans to cut approximately 8,600 UK jobs as part a three-year restructuring and cost-saving programme. According to media sources, the company has cut 3,600 jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
