Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of the Chevron Oronite site, an American company specialised in the manufacture of additives for lubricants and fuels, has announced that it will cut 78 jobs in its French sites of Gonfreville l'Orcher (Seine-Maritime) and Rueil-Malmaison (Haut-de-Seine).
The management of the company explained that the restructuring is an implication of the digitalisation of the sector, and that there will not be dismissals, but only non-replacement of retirements over the next three years. The trade union CGT opposed 'this new downsizing' and triggered an expert appraisal to show that 'this plan is not legitimate'.
In France, Chevron Oronite employs 650 people at the Gonfreville l'Orcher site and 100 at its headquarters in Rueil-Malmaison.
