Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has announced that it will start negotiations with trade unions about plans to cut 465 jobs at Manchester Airport. The cuts will affect all areas of the business, including security officer, engineer and customer service roles.
The chief executive of MAG said the job cuts were necessary because the COVID-19 pandemic had been challenging for the aviation sector and as the UK government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme was coming to an end in October, the group had to consider how many jobs it can sustain.
Representatives of the trade union Unite said the proposed cuts were 'dramatic' and criticised the government for not providing targeted support to the aviation industry.
Manchester Airport is the UK’s third largest airport, which currently employs 3,500 people. The company is part of the Manchester Airports Group.
