Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Airborne Technical Components, a Belgian manufacturer of aircraft components has announced it will be dismissing a significant part of its total workforce. The COVID-19 crisis is the main factor in these decisions to try and save the company. The entire air travel sector has been impacted significantly by the crisis via restrictions on flying with corresponding declines in production and maintenance activity. Despite the extent of the measures, the company management states that even these do not assure that a total closure can be avoided in the future. Trade unions at the company were aware of the difficult commercial situation, but were nevertheless surprised by the extent of the dismissals.
