Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Viking Line, a shipping company, has concluded co-operation negotiations and will dismiss up to 180 employees working in ground services on the Åland Islands and elsewhere in Finland. Approximately 70 of the dismissed employees will be offered new positions with new employment terms.
According to the company, restructuring is needed in order to adapt to the changes in the market caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A large majority of employees working in ground service and on the ferries are temporarily laid-off.
In addition to the dismissals of employees working in ground service in the Åland Islands and Finland, the company announced that it will dismiss 76 employees working on the Swedish-flagged Viking Cinderella and 56 jobs on the Estonian-flagged Viking XPRS.
