Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Polarbröd, a Swedish manufacturer of soft and hard flatbread has started co-operation negotiations as a result of an accidental fire in a factory in Älvsbyn, located in northern Sweden. The fire resulted in a total destruction of the building. In a press release, Polarbröd announces that it will take at least two years to rebuild the factory. This may lead to a reduction of approximately 131 blue collar employees that were working at the affected factory.
The board of Polarbröd, in cooperation with the Swedish public employment service and the municipality, seeks to find alternative solutions for the affected employees, inclunding enrolling employees in targeted education at home. Polarbröd also hopes to be able to offer working opportunities at their other factories.
After the fire, the Government promised support for the small municipality with a population of 5,000 inhabitants, where the burnt down factory is located.
