Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Tate Enterprises, the commercial arm of Tate, the British cultural institution, comprised of a network art galleries and museums has announced plans to cut 313 jobs, almost half of its workforce. The affected employees work in retail and catering roles in gallery shops, cafes and restaurants and in publishing roles. Redundancy consultations with the affected staff and their representatives have already started.
Tate’s senior management team said the decision to cut jobs was necessary, because of the significant decrease in income caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures.
A representative of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), which represents employees of Tate Enterprises, criticised the organisation for making redundancies while the management continued to earn very high salaries.
Tate is a network of art galleries and museums, located in London (Tate Britain and Tate Modern), Liverpool and St Ives.
