Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The supermarket chain Tesco announced its plans to implement a collective dismissal programme which will cause up to 230 redundancies at the offices in Warsaw and Cracow as well as shops across Poland. The programme will affect two occupational categories within the company: up to 84 rank-and-files and up to 146 managerial positions. The conditions of the redundancy programme will be negotiated with the local trade unions; dismissed workers will receive severance pay. The programme will be carried out between 20 August and 31 October 2020.
The programme will not cover 301 shops and 2 distribution centres which are planned to be sold to Salling Group in the fourth quarter of 2020. Tesco revealed that the decision was taken due to economic reasons.
Operating in Poland since 1992, the company has over 300 stores and employs about 10,000 people across the country.
In 2019 and 2020, the company already announced seven other restructuring programmes: January 2019 (1,300 jobs cut), June 2019 (1,480 jobs cut), August 2019 (2,154 jobs cut), September 2019 (2,117 jobs cut) November 2019 (224 jobs cut), February 2020 (380 jobs cut) and June 2020 (200 jobs cut).
