Description

A Finnish shipbuilding company, Meyer Turku, dismisses 166 employees in Turku, in Southwest Finland. This number includes 86 blue-collar workers and 80 white-collar workers. Additional reductions might take place later in 2020 when the company finishes consultation process concerning outfitting, design, and HR functions. According to Meyer Turku, these reductions are needed since the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the cruise market and decreased demand for new ships.

Meyer Turku offers a transition program for dismissed employees to increase their possibilities to find new employment.

According to the company, Meyer Turku currently employs approximately 2,000 workers. During the past years Meyer Turku has expanded its business operations several times.  In January 2019 Meyer Turku recruited 100 new employees, in May 2017 the company announced the recruitment of 500 new employees, and in September 2016 the recruitment of 350 new employees.

Update 10/11/2020:Meyer Turku dismisses additional 84 employees, of which 9 are blue-collar workers and 75 white-collar workers. These dismissals concern equipment and design functions. The total number of employees dismissed during fall 2020 is therefore 250.
