Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dutch ship-building and offshore company Damen Shipyards cuts 1,050 jobs in several countries, including 173 jobs in the Netherlands. The company has suffered record losses in 2019 as a result of some failed projects. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has put extra pressure on the company's financial position. The job cuts in the Netherlands will occur at the locations in Gorinchem, Schiedam and Bergum and will mainly affect the mid-sized vessels division. The company intends to reduce job cuts as much as possible by placing employees at other companies within the Damen group. Consultation of employee representatives has already started.
Damen is an international shipyard group with 13,000 employees worldwide.
