The National Theatre of Great Britain, based in central London, has announced it will cut 400 jobs from 31 August because it cannot afford to pay its employees due to the COVID-19 crisis. The redundancies will affect casual staff: 250 front of house staff and 150 people on the backstage teams.
A spokesperson for the National Theatre said job losses are unavoidable because the National Theatre has been prevented for long-time to 'perform to audiences at usual capacities', and it is unclear when it will become again possible.
A statement by the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (Bectu) warned that the British theatre sector will lose thousands of jobs unless the UK government provided targeted support.
