Luton Airport, the international airport near London has announced a redundancy programme leading to 250 job cuts, almost 30% of its workforce, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The airport’s chief executive officer said it was 'difficult to predict the full effect of this pandemic' and in the short-term passenger numbers were likely to be extremely low.
A representative of trade union Unite union said the decision was 'premature' while the UK government’s Coronavirus Job retention Scheme was ongoing and called on the government to save aviation jobs in the UK.
London Luton Airport primarily serves low-cost airlines, including easyJet, but it also provides services to private jets. In 2018, 16.5 million passengers used the airport.
