Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mainetti UK, the Italy-based global company manufacturing and distributing garment hangers has announced plans to cease production in its factory in Jedburgh, Scotland, making 96 people working in production, warehouse and operations roles redundant. Consultation with the affected staff is already underway.
The company’s managing director said there had been a drop in demand for their products, because fashion retail had been strongly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the proposed restructure was necessary to ensure the sustainability of the business.
Mainetti employs more than six thousand people in 90 locations around the world.
