Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Maison van den Boer, a Dutch catering company based in Veghel, is cutting 140 out of 225. The company already reported losses for several years and was hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis, which caused liquidity problems.
In recent months the company negotiated with its creditors but failed to reach an agreement with some of them, making the restructuring of the company inevitable.
Part of the restructuring plan is the sale of the business unit FoodforCare, which provides catering services to hospitals. The sale of this profitable business unit should help finance the reorganisation plans and provide extra liquidity to the company.
Dismissed workers are offered a guaranteed return, should the company be able to expand its business again. The company has asked employee representatives for their advice on the restructuring plan.
Maison van den Boer is a catering company specialised in high-end catering for large events.
