Description
As confirmed on 8 July 2020, the aircraft manufacturer Airbus will cut 3,175 jobs in Germany as a part of an international internal restructuring programme related to COVID-19. According to Airbus, this number could rise to up to 5,100 if the short-time working allowance is not extended for 24 months. Some 2,325 jobs will be cut in Hamburg, Buxtehude and Fuhlshüttel; 445 jobs are to be shed in Bremen, 365 in Stade and another 40 jobs among other locations. IG Metall strongly opposes those plans and calls for the Federal Government to support employees.
Protests are taking place at all affected plants. Negotiations on a social plan and timeframe will be initiated soon.
Currently, Airbus has 46,000 employees in Germany.
