Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Laudamotion, a subsidiary of Ryanair, dismissed 94 employees: 12 pilots and 82 flight attendants have not agreed to the outcome of the negotiations between the social partners. Laudamotion and its employees have finally come to agree on a new collective wage agreement. After the first round of negotiations failed at the end of May 2020, the airline Laudamotion was about to be closed. This would have resulted in the loss of 300 employees at Laudamotion and additional 200 employees at Crewlink. After long negotiations, the majority of the employees agreed to the new wages, enabling Laudamotion to keep its business in Vienna alive. The company thanked the employees who were agreeing to the unfavourable terms against the opposition of the union. Despite jobs being saved, wage levels have suffered heavy losses. The entry wage for flight attendants is now below € 1,000.
The union stated that this was not acceptable: 'It's about 40 hours of shift work and security-related jobs. Even an assistant in a hotel has 14 times a gross monthly minimum wage of 1,500 euros. In addition, the basic salary of 1000 euros gross is relevant for unemployment or pension contributions'. The lower wage negatively influence workers' pensions levels.
According to media sources, Laudamotion has 300 employees in Vienna. Next to Vienna, Laudamotion has operation bases in Düsseldorf and Palma de Mallorca as well.
