Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The JDP Furniture Group, the UK-based furniture manufacturer, have announced that two of the group’s subsidiaries have been permanently closed in Long Eaton, in the Midlands region of England, making 281 employees redundant. A further 9 jobs have been cut at the Group’s holding company, bringing the total number of redundancies to 290.
The group was placed in administration on 2 April 2020 and the administrators were unsuccessful at finding a buyer for these two subsidiaries. Therefore, both of them, JDP Frames and Welbeck House, were closed, making respectively 76 and 205 redundancies.
A representative of the administrators said that they would provide the necessary support to the affected workers with claiming redundancy payments.
The JDP Furniture Group manufactures and imports sofas and armchairs, including exclusive, handmade items and some of its brands were established over a century ago.
