Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The online food delivery company Foodora hired 300 new employees in Sweden in March 2020. The new positions are either permanent and temporary, and 260 of the newly recruited workers will be appointed as deliverers.
The business expansion comes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, since deliveries of food ordered online have become increasingly popular. The company is, therefore, rapidly growing.
Despite the previous criticisms for unfair working conditions and for the use of agency workers, Foodora argues that these new employees are working directly for the company.
The company employs people in 28 cities in Sweden. Foodora has recently bought two other online food delivery companies, Hungrig.se and Onlinepizza, and it plans to expand its business services to cover for instance grocery deliveries. Foodora is part of the Delivery Hero group.
