Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mise en Place, a temporary employment agency specialised in employing catering professionals for restaurants, large events and festivals, has closed its Dutch activities and has filed for bankruptcy of the Dutch part of the company. The closure means 160 permanent employees and 3.500 temporary workers, mostly students, will lose their jobs. As a result of the closure of bars and restaurants and the cancellation of festivals, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for temporary workers in the catering industry became minimal.
Mise en Place is not the first temporary employment agency for the catering industry to suffer consequences of disruption caused by the pandemic. Earlier this week, Nijmegen Eventure announced its bankruptcy (6 permanent jobs and 4,000 students involved).
