Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The ferry operator Eckerö Linjen dismisses all personal working on its ferry M/S Eckerö, which is registered in Sweden. In total 161 employees will be dismissed. According to the company, this restructuring is needed since the ferry is currently not operating due to travel restrictions connected to the outbreak of COVID-19. All ferry trips are cancelled at least until 15 June 2020.
The company argues that these dismissals are necessary since full-time temporary lay-offs are not possible in Sweden. The company aims to re-employ the workers who are now being dismissed as soon as the ferry starts can start operating again.
Eckerö Linjen is part of the Eckerö group based in Åland Islands. The company currently has about 260 employees.
