Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 16. January 2020, the German automotive supplier Harman, a manufacturer of car audio and navigation systems, will close its plant in Straubing, Bayern, by the end of 2020 which will result in the loss of 625 jobs. Around 25 of those jobs will be relocated to other plants in Germany. In addition, Harman plans further 130 jobs cuts at its development units across Germany. The decision is motivated by cost-optimisation concerns. Further information on the social plan has yet to be published.
The German Metalworkers’ Union (IG Metall) criticised the management harshly. The workers and the union have also demonstrated against the closure.
Harman has currently approximately 2,000 employees in Germany. The company is a subsidiary of Samsung and has several offices in the country - in Cologne, Ulm, Karlsbad near Karlsruhe, Böblingen near Stuttgart and Garching near Munich.
