Description
Salico, a producer of vegetable products, plans to close its production unit in Juva and dismiss 103 employees. The production will be relocated to Kivikko in Helsinki due to logistical reasons – the production unit in Helsinki is more centrally located and thus diminishes the need to transport vegetables to Juva and back to the customers.
The decision has been negotiated between the employer and the workers. The company seeks to support re-employment by offering some of its employees a possibility to continue working in the new production unit in Helsinki. A local shop steward argues that the employees’ possibilities to impact the outcome of the employer-employee negotiations were very limited. As a result of this, the employees organised a day-long strike that was deemed illegal by the company.
Salico is owned by Greenfood. According to the corporate website, Salico has 200 employees in Finland.
